1. What Does GSM Mean in Packaging Box Printing?

GSM stands for Grams per Square Metre. It is the measurement used to determine the weight of paper or board. In packaging box printing, GSM helps us choose the right material for different types of packaging.

Generally, higher GSM paper is heavier and may provide better stiffness. However, two types of paper with the same GSM do not always have the same thickness or strength. This depends on the type of paper, fibre density, coating and how the paper is manufactured.

Let us use photocopy paper as an example.

If you place 70 GSM and 80 GSM photocopy paper side by side, you may notice that the 80 GSM paper feels slightly thicker and more substantial. The 80 GSM paper also tends to provide better opacity, meaning less printed text shows through from the other side.

The same principle applies to packaging box printing. Choosing the right GSM can help make your packaging look solid, presentable and suitable for the product inside.

However, GSM is only one factor to consider. We must also look at the paper quality, thickness, box structure and intended use before deciding which material is best.

2. Why Is Paper GSM Important for Packaging Boxes?

A few years ago, one of our clients who exported products wanted to review their transportation and storage costs.

The client asked us to check the weight of the rigid box packaging we produced for them. They gave us a maximum weight requirement for the finished package, including the product inside. This was important because air freight costs could be reduced if the total shipment weight was lower.

After reviewing the materials, we managed to reduce the weight of the rigid box packaging without compromising its sturdiness.

We also carried out physical tests on the packaging, including drop tests, to check whether the product inside remained protected. The aim was to reduce unnecessary weight while ensuring that the packaging could still perform its intended function.

This is one example of how choosing the right paper and board can help businesses save money on transportation and distribution.

For companies exporting products, even a small reduction in the weight of each package can make a difference when shipping thousands of units.

This is why choosing the right GSM is not just about appearance. It is also about balancing protection, packaging weight and overall cost.

3. What Are the Common GSM Paper Weights Used for Packaging Boxes?

Different products require different paper weights. In packaging box printing, folding carton board commonly falls within the range of approximately 200 to 450 GSM, depending on the application.

Here are some general guidelines.

200–300 GSM

This range may be suitable for lightweight packaging, small boxes and certain food or retail packaging applications. The final choice depends on the box size, material quality and weight of the product.

300–350 GSM

This range is commonly considered for retail packaging that requires a good balance between stiffness and foldability. It can be suitable for cosmetics, personal care products and other consumer goods, depending on the packaging design.

350–450 GSM

Heavier board may be suitable for larger boxes or packaging that requires additional stiffness. However, thicker board is not automatically stronger in every application. The box structure and material properties must also be considered.

600–1,800 GSM or higher

Luxury gift boxes and rigid boxes often use thick greyboard or chipboard as their structural core. Unlike ordinary folding carton board, this material is generally specified by its thickness and density, so the GSM figures can vary considerably.

The ranges above are only general guidelines. The most suitable material depends on your product, box dimensions, construction, printing requirements and budget.

Before deciding on the GSM, it is always better to discuss your packaging requirements with an experienced packaging box printing company.

4. How to Choose the Right GSM for Your Packaging Box

The main purpose of a packaging box is to protect the product inside.

Customers spend money on your product and expect it to reach them in good condition. If they open the box and discover that the product is damaged, they may lose confidence in your brand.

This is why choosing the right packaging material is important.

Before selecting the GSM, consider the following factors.

Product weight: A heavier product may require a stronger box structure and more suitable board.

Product fragility: Glass bottles, electronic products and other fragile items may need protective inserts or holders to prevent movement inside the box.

Box size and shape: A large box may require a different material from a small box, even if both contain products of similar weight.

Transportation and storage: If the product will be exported, stacked in a warehouse or transported over long distances, the packaging must be designed to withstand the expected handling conditions.

Printing and finishing: If you want to add lamination, Spot UV or hot foil stamping, the selected material must be suitable for these processes.

Remember, the objective is not simply to choose the highest GSM available. It is to select the right material and box structure to protect your product while keeping the packaging cost reasonable.

5. Is Higher GSM Paper Always Better for Packaging Boxes?

No. Higher GSM does not always mean better packaging.

There are several reasons why choosing heavier paper may not be the best decision.

Higher material and transportation costs

Heavier paper generally costs more per sheet, depending on the material. It also increases the weight of the finished packaging. For businesses shipping large quantities, this may increase transportation costs.

Folding and assembly problems

Thicker board requires the correct creasing and folding settings. If the material and production process are not suitable, the printed surface may crack along the folds, especially when dark ink covers the folding area.

Paper quality matters

Two boards with the same GSM may perform differently. Their thickness, fibre composition, stiffness and manufacturing quality can affect the final result.

Box design matters

A well-designed box can provide good protection without relying entirely on heavier paper. Inserts, internal supports and the overall construction can make a significant difference.

For these reasons, we should not choose GSM based on product weight alone. We must also consider the size and shape of the box, the type of material, the finishing requirements and how the product will be transported.

The best packaging solution is one that provides sufficient protection without adding unnecessary material or cost.

6. What Is the Difference Between GSM Paper and F-Flute Board?

GSM measures the weight of paper or board per square metre. F-flute board, on the other hand, is a type of corrugated board.

Corrugated board consists of a wavy layer of paper, called the flute, sandwiched between flat paper liners. This structure provides stiffness and helps the board resist bending, while keeping the material relatively lightweight.

If you visit the cosmetics department in a shopping mall, you will find many attractive packaging boxes for skincare, beauty and personal care products.

Over the years, F-flute board has become a popular choice for packaging because it offers a good balance between appearance, sturdiness and cost. It is relatively lightweight while providing good rigidity, making it suitable for many retail packaging applications.

F-flute packaging can also support attractive print finishing techniques such as Spot UV, hot foil stamping, embossing and debossing, depending on the board construction.

Another advantage is that F-flute packaging can be more economical than some alternative packaging materials, depending on the box design, production quantity and finishing requirements. Its lightweight construction may also help reduce transportation costs.

For businesses looking for attractive, sturdy and cost-effective packaging, F-flute board is worth considering.

7. How Do Lamination and Print Finishing Affect Packaging Boxes?

Choosing the right GSM is important, especially when you plan to add lamination and print finishing to your packaging box.

If the paper is too thin, the box may feel flimsy and lack stability. Thin paper can also be more prone to curling during lamination, depending on the paper quality and production process.

For better results, we generally recommend using paper of at least 170 GSM when lamination is required. This provides a more stable base for the finishing process. However, the final choice depends on the type of paper, box design and finishing requirements.

Lamination

Lamination adds a thin protective film to the printed surface. Gloss lamination gives the box a shiny appearance, while matte lamination provides a smooth, less reflective finish.

Lamination helps protect the printed surface from scratches and scuff marks during handling. It can also improve the overall appearance of the packaging.

Spot UV

Spot UV applies a glossy coating to selected areas of the printed design. It is often used to highlight logos, product names and important graphic elements.

The contrast between the glossy coating and a matte background can make the design more attractive and help selected elements stand out.

Hot Foil Stamping

Hot foil stamping uses a heated metal die to transfer metallic foil onto the surface of the packaging box. Gold and silver are popular choices, although other foil colours are also available.

This technique is commonly used for logos, brand names and decorative details. It is particularly suitable for cosmetics, skincare and premium products that require a more luxurious appearance.

When choosing lamination and print finishing, it is important to ensure that the paper or board is suitable for the selected process. The right combination of material and finishing can help your packaging look professional while maintaining the required stability and quality.

8. How Does Your Target Audience Affect Packaging Box Design?

Apart from the product itself, you should also understand your target customers and how you want them to perceive your brand.

If you are selling skincare or beauty products, your packaging should reflect the quality of the product. For luxury brands, the choice of paper, finishing and overall construction can influence how customers perceive your brand. The right packaging should look attractive, feel solid and complement the product inside.
