Why Do Colour Proof for Packaging Box Printing?
If you have put in a lot of effort to design a packaging box, worked for several months, the last thing that you want to happen is mistakes after printing.
Any errors, from spelling, grammatical mistakes to colours and images on the final packaging box can be very damaging to your product. Your customer will feel that your product is not professional.
That is why colour proofing before printing is very important. Taking the time to check every detail of a colour proof can save a lot of time in the long run, as well as money and potential damage to client reputation.
What is a colour proofing?
Colour proofs are used by design and printing companies to let the client final check everything is correct before packaging printing. It is also for the client to make any final amendments. Approval of colour proofing is consider last step before packaging printing.
In Malaysia, colour proofings are normally in digitally printed laser proofs. The accuracy of colour in digital colour proof are normally about 90%. Although not 100%, it is still the most reliable colour proof for checking colour and image sharpness.
Another option is actual printed colour proof in cyan, magenta, yellow and black. This option is more accurate but due to the reason that you need to output printing plates in order to print using offset printing machine, it is often more time consuming and expensive exercise. Most Malaysian prefer to use digital colour proof for checking.

Things to check in a colour proofing
Text
Texts in a packaging box are normally quite small. Which is the reason they can be easily overlook.
We need to final check the spelling and grammar carefully and make sure they are correct.
Designers will use spelling checker in Adobe Illustrator to check text during final artwork stage and the problem is American English will appear. For example: ‘Color’. Malaysian normally use Queen’s English which is ‘Colour’. So we have to be sure that which type of English you want to use for your packaging design.
Design & layout
Final checked every colour, images and line in the colour proof. Minimum line width for offset printing is 0.3 points but in a digital colour proof 0.1 pt will still appear. Line width should be check during artwork stage so that the final printed packaging box will not have missing lines.
Checked the colour proofing to make sure that the cropping are correct. The design is in the middle and empty space on all side are similar. The worst that can happen is the main design of the printed packaging box is not centralized.
Important informations
Final check contact information, address, phone number and website? These are just as important as the other considerations and should not be overlooked.
Packaging phototype / mock up
In Malaysia packaging phototype, is known as mock up.
Mock up is very important for packaging box printing and should not be overlook. We should do a packaging mock up with the digital proof, final check all the panels of the packaging box are correct and before giving the green light to proceed production.
Final thoughts
If possible, get other people to check the colour proofing. Sometimes other people will spot something that we have miss. Making time for proofing can be a massive time saver, so the time should always be made.
If you find something you are not happy withthe colour proof, please let us know. We will do the changes and a second colour proof will be printed and you can triple check the changes you have made.
